This battery is designed to store solar energy and restore it in 12V or 220V with an inverter

It is intended for low power installations: lighting power supply, small power pump, wheelchair, cartte

The AGM solar batteries are more capable of providing very high currents for short periods than the Gel batteries, and this without a sharp drop in tension.

AGM batteries are therefore recommended for applications powering an engine (starter, thruster, fridge-freezer...).

The use of high purity materials and lead grids - calcium guarantees a very low auto-discharge solar battery, which allows them to be stored over long periods. Well loaded at the end of the season, they will easily spend the winter without maintenance or recharge.

In some cases of use, a charge controller may be required, not to overload it or not to descend below 50% of charge, which would reduce the battery life in both cases.

VICTRON AGM batteries do not require maintenance throughout their lifetime

VRLA technology for GEL and AGM solar batteries

VRLA is the abbreviation of Valve Regulated Lead Acid, which means the battery is waterproof. Gas will escape by safety valves only in the event of overload or failure of elements. VRLA batteries have exceptional leak resistance and can be used in all positions.

GEL and AGM batteries are maintenance-free.

Waterproof AGM batteries (VRLA)

With very low internal resistance, solar AGM batteries are particularly suitable for high current discharge applications without high voltage drops. Such applications include in particular converters, thrusters and winches, as well as starters. The Gel range offers even greater intensive cycling durability and a lifetime of up to 20 years.

The AGM and GEL Victron Energy batteries are equipped with copper M8 flat terminals, ensuring the best possible contact by direct screwing of the shells. Made according to ISO 9002 quality standards, these batteries comply with CE and UL specifications. The trays are in fire resistant ABS.

Low self-discharge

Thanks to the use of lead-calcium grids and high purity materials, the AGM and GEL Victron batteries can be stored for a long time without charging. The self-discharge rate is less than 2% per month at 20oC. The double self-load for each 10oC of temperature increase. In cool environment, Victron's VRLA batteries can be stored up to one year without charging.

Extraordinary deep discharge recovery

Victron VRLA batteries have an exceptional recovery capacity even after a deep or prolonged discharge.

It should be noted, however, that frequent deep or prolonged discharges have a negative impact on the life of any lead/acid battery, and that Victron batteries are no exception.

Solar battery discharge characteristics

The nominal capacities of the Victron batteries are given for a discharge in 10 hours and 20 hours. The effective capacity of a solar battery decreases with the intensity and speed of discharges. The capacity reduction will be even faster with constant power consumers such as converters.

Because of their design, Gel batteries have a lower effective capacity than high intensity AGM batteries. On the other hand, Gel batteries have a better life in floating and cycling use.

High temperatures have a negative impact on life. The foreseeable life of VRLA batteries may vary by 30% depending on the average temperature level of the environment is 20° or 30°.

Batteries age due to discharges and recharges. The number of cycles depends on the discharge depth.

A better lifespan thanks to Victron's 4-step adaptive charge

Victron Energy has developed the 4-step adaptive charge. This innovative technology is the result of several years of research and testing. Victron's adaptive charging method eliminates the 3 major drawbacks of the traditional charge in 3 steps:

BatterySafe function:

To avoid excessive gas, Victron invented the BatterySafe function. The BatterySafe function slows the rise of the load voltage when the gas voltage is reached. Studies show that this process brings internal gas to a safe level.

Variable absorption time:

The Victron charger calculates the optimal duration of the absorption phase according to the duration of the initial load phase (Bulk). If the Bulk phase was short, the battery was unloaded and the absorption time will be automatically shortened. A longer initial load phase will give a longer absorption time.

Standby:

Once the absorption phase is complete, the battery is in principle fully charged and the voltage is reduced to the maintenance level (Float). Then and if the battery is not requested for 24 hours, the voltage is still reduced and the battery charger switches to "best" mode. This "veille" tension minimizes corrosion of positive plates. The voltage will then be increased to the absorption level once a week over a short period to compensate for the self-discharge ( Battery Refresh function).

Effects of temperature on charge voltage and optimal charge current

The load voltage shall be reduced as the temperature increases. The temperature compensation is necessary when the battery temperature can descend below 10°C / 50°F or exceed 30°C / 85°F over a prolonged period. The recommended temperature compensation for Victron VRLA batteries is -4 mV/element (-24 mV/°C for a 12V battery). The median temperature compensation point is 20°C / 70°F.

The charging current should preferably not exceed 0.2 C (20 A for a 100 Ah battery). The battery temperature will increase by more than 10°C if the charge current is greater than 0.2 C. Temperature compensation is therefore essential for load currents greater than 0.2 C.
